The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
